Audition information

While auditioning for the roles of the music video we looked for many different aspects and qualities of the participants in order to receive the most suitable result.

We first eliminated anyone who we thought didn't look the part because if they looked out of place the final product wouldn't look as good.

We then decided to test the remaining participants lip syncing ability by playing a music track over the top of them attempting to lip sync.

Rough Cut 1 - Video and Feedback

Rough Cut 1 - Video and Feedback

What Works Well
Nice studio shots and combination between performance and narrative
The idea of the camera being the person in the narrative works
Some well positioned shots
Narrative is becoming clear!

Even Better If
Max was a little more dynamic when performing - re-shoot the performance shots - watch the reflection on Max's glasses and shadows
You finished the song!
Slow down the leaving the bedroom - it is all a bit too quick
Get the lip syncing together with the track
Clean up the jump cut of Ryan walking away

Due to our budget being lower than record companies who usually film music videos, we had minimal equipment on hand whilst filming. The equipment that we did used consisted of;

IPhone 6S

Apple Mac

Cannon Camera

Locations

Locations

Broomfield angle park

Newlands spring farmers field

Chelmer Valley High School

Chelmsford train station

These were the location we decided to use to record our music video. This was due to the fact we felt these locations fitted around the genre of the music and the narrative within the lyrics.

Our genre is indie, this therefore means that we need to look at what artists in the indie genre wear and adapt this to our actor in our music video. It is important that we think very hard about what our 'singer' is wearing because they are the making of the video and if they do not look the part then they are going to let the music video down as they aren't going to portray the way indie genre is meant to be. They need to be dressed in 'hipster' attire.

Audition Information

When it came to hosting auditions for our parts we drafted a list of things we wanted the person in our music video had in order to create the ideal person and we did this for each of the roles. When audtioning we auditioned 3 different peole for each role within the music video and then chose based on who we thought would fit the role best. This was a difficult decision as all of the cadidates were good and it was down to us to decide who would look the part.

Lip syncing practice w/chosen video

We are doing a lip sync practice as we feel that we need to learn techniques in how to make the lip syncing seem as authentic and real as possible.

We chose to lip sync over "cold water" as we feel that it is a very nice song to sync over as the lyrics are very clear so we could get our artist to easily learn the words and easily lip sync over them.

This will help us when it comes to making our music video as it will help us learn how to effectivly lip sync therefore making the music video look better and more proffesional.

Rough plan for music video

No Regrets – Suspects

Brief round up - Max and the girl had a relationship, they were lovers. She lost her job, tried to contact him and couldn't get hold of him, she was very upset and then started cheating on him with a  number of other guys. She is screwed up. Bit like Plan B video but the female is the antagonist not the male! The girl is not seen throughout the whole music video until she is revealed at the end.  She would need to wear the same colours throughout and have the same hair throughout in order for people to recognise it is the same girl. The video starts and ends at the same place

MODERN DAY - Max and girl no longer together
Intro - Split shots between musical instruments, sunset (sped up - like in Tom P's video from last year) and shots of Max in recording studio getting ready to sing
You’re walking through the city late at night, Hand held camera with watch to the time, cut to walking down the lit up street cuts to street lights, cut to light up cigarette cut to walking again (all cuts on the beat)
Smoking cigarettes, drinking cheap wine and  "Smoking cigarettes" - max singing the line in the recording studio then cut to Camera is the girl - stamp cigarette out as if have been smoking and then camera moves down to a bottle of wine in her other hand
You’re lonely, you’re lonely,  Camera pans right to an empty street, camera pans left to an empty street and then continues walking forward on an empty street

Your face brightens up as you see me, you  Cut to Max singing
Were shocked to see me I could see clearly, I Different time - at dusk? Camera on street stops walking and looks at Max walking towards it
Avoided you I didn’t I didn’t want you near me. Cut to Max singing cut to Max walking past the camera avoiding eye contact cut to camera following Max walking away

Bridge
It’s fine you weren’t special anyway, Cut to Max's face walking away after he has left her smiling then cut to Max singing in recording studio

PAST - When the Girl and Max were together
You’d pick and choose a different boy every day, Camera is girls perspective again cut to text being sent saying I love you, camera tilts to look at other guys in a room - close ups of them - maybe a party? Cut to scanning through photos of boys on her mobile phone
There was enough for you that’s fair to say. Cut to camera being kissed by a different guy and her deleting the I love you text

Chorus
MODERN DAY - Max and the girl no longer together
So make your plans and I’ll make mine, I want Max singing to camera as if he is still walking away from her, camera looks back at her stood looking at Max - she should be out of focus so you can't see her properly
To enjoy this short amount of time, I have no Cut to various different Musical instrument shots? Drums and Guitar and Max performing to camera in studio
Regrets, no regrets. Max performing in studio - different angles and musical instruments
And don’t think I’m making a mistake, I stick to Max on the street walking away from her still performing to camera, see her in the background miming and shouting but she is still out of focus
Choices that I make I have no regrets, Max gets phone out of pocket and types message, cut to the screen of the phone and it says no regrets
no regrets Cut to Max in the recording studio

Verse 2
PAST - When the girl and Max were together
You lost your job, you lost your motivation, Camera as eyes of girl again looking at another person in a suit behind a desk explaining they have lost their job and handing them an envelope
You started waiting for a train at the station, cut to camera looking at watch,  camera phoning Max, hands showing frustration that he doesn't answer, camera opening the envelope and seeing P45 at the top of the letter in the envelope
Didn’t care which stop or which destination,  cut to ripping up envelope and P45 and chucking the ripped up pieces in the air
You just needed to lose all the frustration. Walking into the train station and going through the barriers at the train station

You’re walking on the platform in your broken Camera walking down platform as girl, with van shoes. Lifts shoe up and it has a hole in it
Vans, until you get by approached by another man comes towards camera and talks to girl
Man, he walks away but you take his hand we he then walks away from the camera cut to camera following the man walking away and hand goes out from the camera to stop him
Both know you have dirty plans. Cut to close up on his face, with him doing the head nudge to indicate going back to his - he knows he is in luck! Fades to black to imply the deed is going to be done!

It will be you that mis-treats him Cut to camera getting out of bed and picking up clothes/shoes from floor
He has to lose it all and you get to win Cut to taking money out of his wallet in the bedroom while he sleeps
You're gonna miss the feeling of his skin Camera walks out of the bedroom and then pans back to the guy in the bed
I bet you can't wait till you begin Camera going downstairs, Opening house door and then fade to black

MODERN DAY - Max and the girl are recently split
Bridge
Its fine you weren’t special anyway, you’d Cut to Max singing in recording booth
Pick and choose a different boy every day, Camera as girl going on a date with a different guy in restaurant
There was enough for you that’s fair to say. Camera as the girl having a drink somewhere else with another guy cut to shot of Drums on the drum solo

So make your plans and I’ll make mine, I want Max singing walking down street walking past the bar she is drinking in and sees her through the window - she should be out of focus
To enjoy this short amount of time, I have no Cut to various different Musical instrument shots? Drums and Guitar and Max performing to camera in studio
Regrets, no regrets. Max singing though the window to her and cut to performing in studio - different angles and musical instruments

And don’t think I’m making a mistake, I stick to Max walking away from the bar and she runs out of the bar after him, again out of focus
Choices that I make I have no regrets, Max gets phone out of pocket  presses send message, cut to the screen of the phone and it says no regrets
no regrets Cut to Max in the recording studio

PAST - When Max and the girl had just split up
Verse 3
You confused me and messed with my head,  Max sat on his own in the park on a bench looking upset and lonely, camera pans round him in a circle
You weren’t right for me that’s why they said, Max gets a ring box out of his pocket and opens it to reveal and engagement ring
You couldn’t be honest and you had me mislead, Max singing to himself - he is gutted
Now you are my only regret. Max throws the ring box and walks away from the park bench leaving the ring box on the floor

You confused me and messed with my head, Max getting home and Max looking at photo of the girl on his phone  singing to the photo
You weren’t right for me that’s why they said, He gets angry and chucks stuff around in a  house
You couldn’t be honest and you had me mislead, Max looking devastated
Now you are my only regret. Max singing to camera looking sad

MODERN - Max and the girl are split up
Its fine you weren’t special anyway, you’d Cut to Max singing in recording booth
Pick and choose a different boy every day, Camera as girl scanning through guys on the phone and then gets to Max
There was enough for you that’s fair to say. Camera as girl crying over a photo of Max and wiping her tears away. the photo drops to the floor

So make your plans and I’ll make mine I want Musical instruments and performance shots in studio
To enjoy this short amount of time, I have no, Musical instruments and performance shots in studio
Regrets, no regrets Max holding up a sign that says No Regrets

And don’t think I’m making a mistake, I stick Max walking down the street singing to the camera
To the choices that I’ve made, I have no Performance shots
Regrets, no regrets. Max telling the camera and sending the text again

So make your plans and I’ll make mine I want Camera as girl, receiving the no regrets text and she leaves the house
To enjoy this short amount of time, I have no, Camera as the girl pouring wine into glass and downing it
Regrets, no regrets Camera as girl putting coat on stepping outside and starts to walk down road

And don’t think I’m making a mistake, I stick Max walking down the street singing to the camera
To the choices that I’ve made, I have no Performance shots
Regrets, no regrets. Performance shots

MODERN - SHOWING DOWNFALL OF THE GIRL
You’re walking through the city late at night, Camera follows the girl up the street with cigarette and alcohol in hand
Smoking cigarettes, drinking cheap wine and camera pans round girl like it did with Max before not really seeing her face
You’re lonely, you’re lonely, Her reveal - She looks at the camera with sadness then the camera backs out and leaves her on her own in the street

Music videos that have inspired us

Music videos that have inspired us

Duke Dumont - "I Got U"

This music video inspired us to use the third person approach to our music video. This concept that they have used is really effect as it shows everything from someone elses point of view instead of just having a person on camera lip syncing and acting accordingly. This is something that we would really like to incorporate this in our music video. The third person effect for the music video is instigated through the Virtual Reality Headset and this is how the narrative of the music video begins.

Plot and Narrative

Plot and Narrative

The plot and narrative for our music video is that a guy (the person singing the song) has had a break up with the girl he loved. He was heartbroken and she realised that what she had done was wrong. The heartbroken guy then feels  very depressed and lonely and finds himself in a park thinking about life, he had planned to marry the girl and had bought her a ring as a token of his love. He never gives her the ring and she never knew he had bought her one. The girl basically started meeting up with other boys and ended up cheating on the guy, she then realised that what she had done was wrong and missed him and was going to try to get him back. The music video has it from two peoples points of view, the girl and the boy. The girl ends up losing her job and ever since her relationship ends things end up going badly for her (Smoking and Alcohol). The music video is from the girls point of view and is filmed in 3rd person and the girl is only revealed at the end of the music video. The guy is seen on camera throughout. We also cut to performance shots of the artist singing the song in the studio in order to get a nice range of footage.

Casting Information

Artist: Max Carneige-Riviere
He will be the one to perform in the performance shots  .

Max narrative role: Ryan Moore
He will be playing the role of max in the narrative parts of the video.

As the female is rarely seen in the video as she is mainly used for the first person camera view we did not feel that we need to cast a specific actress.

Music Video Conventions

Music Video Conventions

Indie is short for independent, indie music is a mix of lots of different types of music, including pop, jazz, rock, blues and even poetry. The genre was first introduced in the 1950's - Indie bands would have played in small venues or even garages. Indie music isn't particularly popular and some of the most well known bands would have started by 'gigging' in small venues or garages as they had a low budget to perform. In the 2000's the music industry developed and there was a growing importance of the internet this was helpful for indie bands as they were able to become more successful globally.

Editing
Most videos in the indie genre would usually use special effects in order to make their video run more smoothly or to create an effect to make the audience feel like they are apart of the music video. Shots are usually cut either fast or slow to reflect the pace/beat of the music video. The black and white effect is also very popular and used a lot as it creates a sad and deep feeling. An example of this is Ed Sheeran's music video for 'The A Team'.

Camera
The must common type of camera shots used in indie music videos are close up shots as it introduces the star and creates more of a connection with the singer/band and the audience. It also conforms with Goodwin's theory as it includes close ups and one of his theories is that all music videos should contain a close up of the singer. Close up shots highlight the artists talents when they are singing and it also shows their emotions. Long and wide shots, as well as establishing shots in order to set the scene. An example of this is The Kook's music video 'Naive'.

Setting
Indie music videos are known to be relatively low budget, the main settings of the video are in the studios, beaches, cities, parks, etc. These are places which can be accessed easily and they can create a very mysteries setting but keeping it basic at the time. With this in mind we have decided to film our music video using an urban setting.

Mise en Scene
Mise en scene plays a larger role in music videos and especially in the indie genre. This is because a lot of indie artists often have a retro look and this can often be created through the use of props and their clothing. Costumes give people their identity and set them apart from everyone else. Make-up is an important part of music video's too as they help to set the time period. For example, Paloma Faith has very subtly makeup in her videos with a pale face and red lipstick, this suggests that her music videos are supposed to be similar to the 50's.

Comparison Of Music Videos Findings

Cameron: See You Again (Wiz Kalifa & Charlie Puth)

Charlie: Yay (Nines)

Adam: Middle (DJ Snake)

Me: All Of The Lights (Kanye West, Kid Cudi & Rhianna)

All group members found out that the narrative of the music video should match the lyrics of the song. A variety of shots have been used to show this narrative clearly and must be used within our own music video.

Rough Plan for music video

In our music video we will be located in the rougher parts of London and for some of the shots we will be using first person shots to help with the narrative of the video and to make the audience feel more involved with the video. There will be many longer shots to help with the story but for the most part the cutting will be very quick and their will be a lot of different shots.

Top 4 Favourite Music Videos

Top 4 favourite music videos

Cameron - M Lo "Pain", because of the dance chorography and he enjoys the song.

Ryan - Kanye West "Ni**as", because of the first person perspective from the crowd, the live performance shots, and the symmetrical filter used.

Adam - PSY "Gangman style", Catchy song lyrics and the dancing is memorable fun.

Charlie - Chip "Peri Peri Sauce" because the lyrics match the visuals and it looks good.

Target Audience Brief

As the music and the artist of the music video place in the genre of indie our target audience will be aged between 15 and 21. They will mostly be hipsters who dress differently  to the majority of the population. The demographic of the audience would be in rating E as they would most likely be students or apprentices who dont have/earn too much money.

Uses and gratifications theory is an approach to understanding why and how people actively seek out specific media to satisfy specific needs. The uses and gratification theory is an audience-centered approach to understanding mass communication. Differing from other media effect theories that question "what does media do to people?", UGT focuses on "what do people do with media?"

We are using the Uses and Gratifiation theory for our audiecne as our music video will reflect how most of out audiecne will live there lives and what they do with them. So therefore they will have a good understanding of the videoand be able to relate to it.
