Girl friend:
As the female is rarely seen in the video as she is mainly used for the first person camera view we did not feel that we need to cast a specific actress.
Indie is short for independent, indie music is a mix of lots of different types of music, including pop, jazz, rock, blues and even poetry. The genre was first introduced in the 1950's - Indie bands would have played in small venues or even garages. Indie music isn't particularly popular and some of the most well known bands would have started by 'gigging' in small venues or garages as they had a low budget to perform. In the 2000's the music industry developed and there was a growing importance of the internet this was helpful for indie bands as they were able to become more successful globally.
Editing
Most videos in the indie genre would usually use special effects in order to make their video run more smoothly or to create an effect to make the audience feel like they are apart of the music video. Shots are usually cut either fast or slow to reflect the pace/beat of the music video. The black and white effect is also very popular and used a lot as it creates a sad and deep feeling. An example of this is Ed Sheeran's music video for 'The A Team'.
Camera
The must common type of camera shots used in indie music videos are close up shots as it introduces the star and creates more of a connection with the singer/band and the audience. It also conforms with Goodwin's theory as it includes close ups and one of his theories is that all music videos should contain a close up of the singer. Close up shots highlight the artists talents when they are singing and it also shows their emotions. Long and wide shots, as well as establishing shots in order to set the scene. An example of this is The Kook's music video 'Naive'.
Setting
Indie music videos are known to be relatively low budget, the main settings of the video are in the studios, beaches, cities, parks, etc. These are places which can be accessed easily and they can create a very mysteries setting but keeping it basic at the time. With this in mind we have decided to film our music video using an urban setting.
Mise en Scene
Mise en scene plays a larger role in music videos and especially in the indie genre. This is because a lot of indie artists often have a retro look and this can often be created through the use of props and their clothing. Costumes give people their identity and set them apart from everyone else. Make-up is an important part of music video's too as they help to set the time period. For example, Paloma Faith has very subtly makeup in her videos with a pale face and red lipstick, this suggests that her music videos are supposed to be similar to the 50's.
Cameron: See You Again (Wiz Kalifa & Charlie Puth)
Charlie: Yay (Nines)
Adam: Middle (DJ Snake)
Me: All Of The Lights (Kanye West, Kid Cudi & Rhianna)
All group members found out that the narrative of the music video should match the lyrics of the song. A variety of shots have been used to show this narrative clearly and must be used within our own music video.
In our music video we will be located in the rougher parts of London and for some of the shots we will be using first person shots to help with the narrative of the video and to make the audience feel more involved with the video. There will be many longer shots to help with the story but for the most part the cutting will be very quick and their will be a lot of different shots.
Max skating through the city at night, feeling lonely, reflecting on previous relationships. Ex-girlfriend Nicole appears, and max has flashbacks of good times with her.
As the music and the artist of the music video place in the genre of indie our target audience will be aged between 15 and 21. They will mostly be hipsters who dress differently to the majority of the population. The demographic of the audience would be in rating E as they would most likely be students or apprentices who dont have/earn too much money. Uses and gratifications theory is an approach to understanding why and how people actively seek out specific media to satisfy specific needs. The uses and gratification theory is an audience-centered approach to understanding mass communication. Differing from other media effect theories that question "what does media do to people?", UGT focuses on "what do people do with media?"
We are using the Uses and Gratifiation theory for our audiecne as our music video will reflect how most of out audiecne will live there lives and what they do with them. So therefore they will have a good understanding of the videoand be able to relate to it.
For our Music video 'Cigarettes & Cheap Wine' - Suspects, we have had a a thought about locations, props and what ideas we have come up with to meet the narrative of the song. Props:
